Navagio is on the other side of Zakynthos from the turtles, on the northwest coast, and for most visitors it is the second boat trip of the holiday. It is also the one that changes every year. The beach has been closed or restricted since a 5.4 earthquake brought down part of the cliff in September 2022, and every spring a new decision decides what you may do there.
This post covers the state of play as we checked it on 2 November 2026: the rules that applied in 2026, what we could find after they expired, the viewpoint, and the plan to rebuild the beach around the wreck.
The quick answer
Shipwreck Beach stayed closed to landings and swimming all through 2026. A joint ministerial decision (FEK B' 3033/28.05.2026) kept boats 50 m from the shore until 31 October 2026. On 2 November we found no newer decision in Greek or English news, and no reopening date. Treat it as closed for 2027 until a new decision says otherwise. The clifftop viewpoint is open and free, and boats still pass the cove.
Is Navagio (Shipwreck Beach) open now?
No. Landing and swimming were banned through 31 October 2026, and on 2 November 2026 nothing had been published to reopen it.
The 2026 rules came from a joint decision of four ministries, published in the Government Gazette as FEK B' 3033/28.05.2026 and in force until 31 October 2026. It followed surveys by OASP, the Greek earthquake planning agency, which found a risk of extensive landslides. Authorities reassess the cliffs about twice a year, according to Euronews.
The expiry date does not mean the beach opened on 1 November. Searching Greek and English news on 2 November, we found no new decision and no announcement of a reopening. In recent years the rules have been set again before each summer season. We expect the same in 2027 and will update this post when it is published.

What are the rules for boats and swimmers at Navagio?
In 2026: no vessel within 50 m of the shore, no anchoring, no swimming anywhere in the cove, and no access to the beach on foot.
To Vima summed up the decision: a complete ban on the beach's prohibited and controlled-access zones, swimming banned in the sea between the two ends of the cove, and no boat closer than 50 metres. The Hellenic Police enforce it, and fines come on top of any civil or criminal liability. The only exception is rescue work. Drones need a special permit, Greek Trip Planner reports.
The decision left one door open: marked safe zones where boats could come closer, if the port authority agrees and OASP signs off. None had been set up by the end of the 2026 season. Any operator promising a swim at Shipwreck Beach is either out of date or breaking the rules.

Can you still see the shipwreck from the viewpoint?
Yes. The clifftop platform above Anafonitria is open, free and about 40 to 50 minutes by car from Zakynthos town.
The 2026 decision kept the upper viewpoint and its existing platform open, once fencing along the cliff edge was finished. Greek Trip Planner puts parking at the top, free or a couple of euros depending on the day, a few minutes' walk from the platform. Go between 9 and 11 am, or in the last hour before sunset. After 11 am in July and August expect to queue 10 to 15 minutes for the front rail.
Stay behind the fence. The cliffs are about 200 m high, and the reason the beach is shut is that they move. The informal ledges where people used to take the famous photo are exactly the places the authorities fenced off.
What is the plan to widen Navagio beach?
Engineers want to push the shoreline about 30 m out to sea with 45,000 cubic metres of gravel, to keep winter waves off the wreck. A second phase would restore the ship.
The plan, reported by Euronews on 13 July 2026, would move the wreck, now about 25 m from the waterline, further inland in effect. In.gr reports that the studies come from the National Technical University of Athens, that the beach works are budgeted at EUR 3.9 million with about EUR 2.5 million more for the wreck, and that the gravel would arrive by cargo ship and go in with floating cranes.
Not everyone is convinced. Manolis Vasilakis, a geology professor at the University of Athens, told In.gr that the sea would soon wash the material away. Keep Talking Greece, citing local media, said the tender had been approved. No start or finish date has been announced. Do not plan a 2027 holiday around a reopened beach.

A full day round the west coast on a pirate-style ship: the Blue Caves, a photo stop off Navagio, and swims at Xigia, Shiza and Keri.
Explore the Shipwreck Beach cruise Tour detailsWhich boat trips still go to Navagio, and can you add the turtles?
Cruises still pass the cove for photos from the water. The turtles live in Laganas Bay on the south coast, so plan them as a separate half day.
From the north, small boats leave Agios Nikolaos for the Blue Caves and Navagio in 3 to 4 hours; Porto Vromi on the west coast is only 15 to 20 minutes from the cove. From Zakynthos town, the pirate ship cruise takes 7 hours round the cliffs: the Blue Caves, a Navagio photo stop, Shiza, the sulphur water at Xigia and the Keri Caves. Food and drinks are sold on board, not included. On the way back it passes Marathonisi, where you may see a turtle, but that is a bonus, not the point.
For turtles, book a separate morning or evening from Agios Sostis. The Marathonisi and Keri speedboat is our default, and the Myzithres trip adds a pebble cove with tall white cliffs that gives you a taste of Navagio's scenery without the ban. Our turtle boat comparison lays out the differences.

Turtles first: three hours in the marine park, a swim at the Keri Caves and on Marathonisi, pickup included.

Is Navagio beach closed in 2027?
No 2027 decision had been published on 2 November 2026, and no reopening was announced. Every summer since the 2022 landslide has brought restrictions, so plan on seeing it from a boat or the viewpoint.
Can you swim at Shipwreck Beach?
Not in 2026. Swimming was banned in the whole cove, and boats had to stay 50 m from the shore.
Is the Navagio viewpoint open?
Yes. The clifftop platform above Anafonitria stayed open in 2026 and costs nothing to visit. Stay behind the fencing.
Can I see turtles on a Navagio boat trip?
Only by luck. The turtles feed in Laganas Bay on the south coast; round-island cruises pass it on the way back, but a Laganas Bay trip is the way to look for them.
