Every summer the six nesting beaches of Laganas Bay run on a two-month clock. Females come ashore from May, the eggs sit in the sand for about eight or nine weeks, and the hatchlings break out from July into autumn. The boats that take you out to look for adult turtles in the bay have nothing to do with this part. It happens at night, on beaches that are closed after sunset.
This post covers what ARCHELON and the press reported up to 2 November 2026: the first nest and the first hatchlings, the work that goes on in September and October, the nest counts of the last few years, and a careful look at 2027.
The quick answer
ARCHELON volunteers found the first 2026 nests on Gerakas on 14 May and the first hatchling tracks on Dafni beach early on 14 July 2026. Hatching ran through the summer, with the last nests watched until mid October. Laganas Bay set its record in 2024 with about 2,470 nests. The 2026 total had not been published on 2 November. Expect the 2027 nesting season to start again in mid May and the first hatchlings in early to mid July.
When did the 2026 turtle hatching season start on Zakynthos?
On Tuesday 14 July 2026, when ARCHELON's team found hatchling tracks on Dafni beach in Laganas Bay. The first nests of the year had been laid two months earlier, on 14 May, at Gerakas.
ARCHELON reported that its patrol spotted the tracks in the early hours of 14 July and informed the local NECCA management unit, which runs the marine park. Ta Nea had reported the first Zakynthos nests of the year on Gerakas on 14 May, a day after the first Greek nest at Vounaki in Kyparissia Bay.
Sixty-one days from first nest to first hatchling is right on the average. A long-term study of the bay puts incubation at about 62 days on Marathonisi, 56 on East Laganas and 49 on Kalamaki, where the sand runs hotter. Last year was a touch earlier: in 2025 the first Zakynthos hatchling reached the sea from Dafni on 11 July, and Elaia beach in Kyparissia Bay logged a hatching on 9 July, the earliest ever recorded in Greece since monitoring began in 1984.

What happens to the turtle nests in September and October?
The late nests keep hatching into autumn, and volunteers keep checking every one until the field season closes in mid October.
Females lay several clutches about two weeks apart, so a nest dug in late July or August only hatches in late September or October. In August ARCHELON put out a call that hatchlings need help in September and October, with a two-week volunteer slot instead of the usual four. Its Zakynthos and Rethymno projects ran to 15 October 2026.
The work is unglamorous. Teams walk the beaches at dawn to read the night's tracks, shade hatchlings that emerge late and get caught by the morning sun, and open each nest a few days after it hatches to count the eggs and free any stragglers stuck under sand or stones. On Laganas beach ARCHELON and the park have run public nest excavations in late September, where anyone can watch. If you are on the island in autumn, ask at an ARCHELON info station whether one is planned.

How many turtle nests were there on Zakynthos in 2024, 2025 and 2026?
2024 was the record year with about 2,470 nests in Laganas Bay. 2025 followed with about 2,155. The 2026 count had not been released on 2 November 2026.
The long-run average is far lower. A 38-year study in Chelonian Conservation and Biology put it at 1,209 nests a year from 1984 to 2021, with a range from about 667 to 2,018 and no significant long-term trend. Three seasons in a row above 2,000 is new territory. ARCHELON's 2025 season report gives 2,033 nests for 2023, 2,470 for 2024 and about 2,155 for 2025.
Sekania, the beach nobody may visit, carries the bay. Greek City Times, quoting ARCHELON and WWF Greece, counted 1,201 nests there in 2024, more than half the total. ARCHELON published its 2025 figures on 1 December 2025, and the 2026 report is likely to land around the same time. We will add it here when it does.
| Season | Nests in Laganas Bay | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 1984 to 2021 average | 1,209 | Range about 667 to 2,018 |
| 2023 | 2,033 | Above the old high |
| 2024 | about 2,470 | Record; over 2,350 by late August |
| 2025 | about 2,155 | Third high year in a row |
| 2026 | Not yet published | ARCHELON report expected around December |

Explore the turtle speedboat tour Tour detailsCan you see turtle hatchlings on Zakynthos as a visitor?
Rarely, and not on purpose. Hatchlings mostly emerge at night, and the nesting beaches are closed from sunset to 7 am.
No tour shows you hatchlings, and none should. The park rules keep everyone off the nesting beaches at night, ban lights near the sand and ask you not to touch the nest cages. What you can do is meet an early riser by chance on a morning beach. ARCHELON's advice for that moment is short: do not touch it, do not carry it to the sea, no flash, shade it with your body or a towel if the sun is strong, and clear obstacles from its path. If you find hatchlings away from any marked nest, call the 24-hour turtle line on +30 6941 511 511.
For the full story, visit an ARCHELON info station: one in Solomos Square in Zakynthos town, one in front of the Crystal Beach Hotel in Kalamaki. The adult turtles are a different matter. They feed and rest in the bay from spring to autumn, and that is what the boats go out to look for. Our guide to the best months and hours for turtles covers the timing.
Prefer the slow boat? The glass floor shows the seabed even when no turtle comes up, and you get an hour on Marathonisi.

Nesting should start again around mid May and hatching in early or mid July. After three big years, a smaller nest count in 2027 would be normal, not alarming.
Loggerhead females do not breed every summer. NOAA Fisheries says they return every 2 to 3 years and lay three to five nests a season, about two weeks apart, with roughly 100 eggs in each. Nest counts swing hard from year to year for that reason alone. Judge the bay on the run of years, not on one summer.
For a 2027 trip, the plan is simple. Come in June if you want quiet water and adults in the bay. Come from mid July to September if you want to be on the island while nests hatch, and accept that you will see cages and tracks, not baby turtles. The boat season and its rules stay the same: Zone A closed to boats from 1 May to 31 October, 6 knots elsewhere in the park, and a 10-minute, 15 m limit around each turtle. Book a trip whose crew sticks to it. One guest on the Myzithres speedboat wrote that the skipper "was very respectful with the turtles and explained a lot to us during the tour."
